What is rooftop garden?

 

A rooftop Garden is nothing but garden in the roof of a house   in town or city area. there are many building in the town or city area and these building have place in roof being cultivated by different types of crops .

Present status:

We see different Rooftop gardens at city /town area. But most of the garden are made unplanned. To make a sustainable and fruitful rooftop garden we should maintain some guidelines. If we follow the guidelines you can grow easily different fruits and vegetables .Here discussed some points for rooftop garden.

Why we need rooftop garden?

Though we are sufficient in cereal crops but we are crisis in fruits and vegetables for nutritional purpose.

According to WHO one should take fruits and vegetables 400gm daily for nutritional make up.

The cultivable land of the city and town area covered by house, no other extra land for cultivation ,but for environmental safety we need some plants or green trees in the living area. For this purpose we have to plantation of green trees in rooftop area.

This is why  we need to cultivate in rooftop.

 we should cultivate some fruits and vegetables in the rooftop . Rooftop is available in the city and town ,no need of lands for this method, so rooftop gardening become popular day by day.

1.Useful materials: 

Tub (plastic/cement/soil),half drum, plastic bag, permanent bed, axe, spade, pruning shear, sickle, knife,  sovel,  pot, sprinkler, scissors, garden hose, hand sprayer ,soil ,sand, cow dung /manure, pesticide ,fertilizer ,pool, bamboo etc.

2.Preparation of soil and fertilizer

• Collect sandy /sandy loam soil
•  Treat the soil by chemicals/sunlight/burning with saw dust/straw
• Mix the  cow dung or compost and fertilizers

Plant selection:

Method of planting :

• Tub  method:
• In this method earthy or plastic top are used. it is very easy to transfer from one place to another and its  cost is very low,, the diameter of the top should be 14 to 18 inch ,the top should be fill up with organic matter with 100 gram TSP and 50 gram mop. After 10 to 12 days of soil mixture preparation top should fill up.

• Half drum method:

• This method also popular for rooftop gardening ,it should be prepared by cutting A full drum then some pour would be making in the bottom .the bottom layer should be covered by break peaces and then fill sóil ,in each of the drum there should be 200 gram TSP+ 100 gram Mop fertilizer.

• Bed method:

• Bed method also popular for modern technology. some permanent bed would be prepared by cementing materials .the bed should be used for vegetables and spices cultivation .Bed would be fill up with organic matter and  some fertilizer should be used during  transplanting

• Planting on tub:

• Plant should be select according to top size ,small top should be used for  vegetables specially seasonal vegetables and spices. small type fruit tree also planted in this top, in half drum method  should be fill up with fruits .

• Macha method :

• This is only for cucurbits and Country gourd ,leguminous  crops which needs Macha ,we can made it with bamboo sticks and and GI wire, string ,net should be used in this purpose, now there are many types of macha net found in market . Grapes vine may grow on macha easily.string bean, sweet gourd, snake gourd,kakrol, rib gourd country bean, cucumbers,betel leaf,chui jal,are grown on macha

Polynet tunnel or polyshade:

In some crops we can use it.It may done during cold weather and heavy Tomato, cabbage, cauliflower,lettuce,  seasonal flowers,chilli, potato, Brinjal are grown under polyshade or polynet house .

Rack method:

You can made some rakes with bamboo or wood. Small type plant like cactus, creepers, grass type flower can culture in plastic pot or spares water bottle 

Hanging methods: 

This also also made by bamboo or wood for ornamental plants . plastic pot or small plastic bottle can be used for hanging method.we can grow some creepers, Grass type flower in it.

House method:

This is made muddy or cementing materials.Some aquatic plants like panifall, water Lily,algae may culture in it.
